Directors Observations

(Dr. K.V.Pandya)

Jawaharlal Nehru cancer Hospital & Research Centre Bhopal (MP-India) occupies a place of prominence in the newly established cancer institutes in the country. It has earned nation wide appreciation for its excellent and dedicated services. On one hand the institute is equipped with almost all the specialities required for full and proper treatment of cancers and on the other hand offers full fledged diagnostic facilities for cancer as well as other diseases through multi modalities such as Nuclear   medicine, Pathology and Radiology & Imaging etc.  All facilities are located under one roof under a well co-ordinated system.

Dedicated to the public on 11th January, 1995, the hospital has treated nearly 43,000 patients till 31st December 2009 to the best satisfaction of all concerned. This constitutes patients of all age groups including young children to little babies.  It has been noticed that oral cancers are most common among the male population while cancer Cervix and cancer Breast are prevalent on large scale among females. What is most disturbing is that   Bhopal and its adjoining areas are known to have the highest incidence of oral Cancer in the world.  This obviously underlines the need to launch a united crusade against the cancer in all its forms on a big scale.

A significant number of patients who received treatment at our hospital are completely cured and living cancer free life. A good number of patients reporting at advanced stages have also been considerably benefited by the treatment and have shown remarkable improvement. Their lifespan has been lengthened beyond expectations. Some of those who had completely lost hope of survival sprang pleasant surprise by responding to the treatment positively.

Several terminally advanced patients got considerable relief from pain and other sufferings enabling them to improve the quality of life till they survive as a result of proper application of Palliative Care devices comprising medical, psychological and spiritual support. Social workers, ex-patients, artists, writers, poets and religious personalities are also involved in this novel procedure. It has been established beyond doubt that the morale of the patient plays a crucial role in fighting this dreaded disease.  In view of the growing importance of this newly emerged speciality, a full-fledged  Hospice specializing exclusively in pain control and palliative care is coming up in Shahpura area of Bhopal under the auspices of this hospital. This centre will be the first of it’s kind not only in M.P. but in Central India.

While awareness about other diseases is spreading rather rapidly unfortunately awareness vis-à-vis cancer is still moving at a snail’s pace.  The result therefore is disastrous.  People of all ages, sexes and sections report quite late for the treatment of this disease. Even doctors, intellectuals, educationists and similar enlightened groups are no exceptions.

The situation is worse in Madhya Pradesh because of extreme backwardness and ignorance resulting in total indifference towards growing scourge of cancer.  We have therefore given special attention to the development of community oncology.  Free cancer detection camps and cancer awareness meetings are organized regularly both in urban and rural areas by us for early detection and inculcating a sense of awareness about various aspects of the disease including its symptoms.  Apart from visual presentations, literature is also distributed free on such occasions.  A side by side campaign against tobacco chewing & smoking have also been intensified with the establishment of WHO sponsored Tobacco Cessation Clinic in the hospital.  We are gradually covering practically all the sections in the society in general and slum dwellers and students in particular.  Efforts are on to involve more and more social and service organizations in this extremely useful campaign.

The studies and surveys conducted by this institute reveal a very disquieting warning – cancer is gradually turning into some sort of an epidemic, which should serve as a wake up call to the medical community, government and society at large. At the same time the hospital is fully convinced that timely treatment at right place can save several precious human lives. The right place can only be a comprehensive and full-fledged cancer hospital having all the necessary multi dimensional diagnostic and treatment facilities of a specialized nature such as ours. A large galaxy of experts and dignitaries have expressed the unanimous view that the hospital is fully competent to provide best of treatment to cancer patients and that there is no need for them to go outside the state. Some of them have even described it as one of the best medical institute in the country.

Only those who go to places like Mumbai or Delhi know the colossal financial & unbearable physical trauma they undergo in the quest for better treatment.  We have been able to curb this trend subsequently and hope that more and more patients will make use of the available national level facilities at our hospital.

It is said, "Seeing is believing". On behalf of hospital management, I therefore extend standing invitation to the members of medical fraternity and all other concerned in proper treatment of this dreaded disease to visit our hospital.  I am confident almost all of them will agree with us that the institute potentially deserves to be fully utilized.  I humbly and most respectfully urge upon the medical community and enlightened citizens to motivate patients of the state to go in for treatment in our institute.  We assure that we will not be lacking in our efforts to offer quality treatment ,full care and commitment.
